The Blade Chamber Series - Remembrance
Sunday, September 17, 2006
Toledo Club
7:00pm
Klein               String Trio*
Beethoven      Ghost Trio
Messiaen        Quartet for the End of Time

Two Composers who experienced the horrors of German internment during the Second World War produced enduring chamber works that testify to the indomitability of the human spirit.  Gideon Klein’s String Trio, completed nine days before his death at the age of twenty-six, betrays none of the horrific conditions of the Terezin concentration camp.  Olivier Messiaen, who survived the ravages of the Holocaust, created the Quartet for the End of Time, an extended hymn to the redemptive power of faith that is one of the most important works of the twentieth century.

Beethoven’s Ghost Trio serves as a thematic and musical counterpoint.  The foreboding Largo from which the work draws its subtitle only emphasizes the flowing serenity and hopefulness of the concluding Presto.  Tickets: $25 to $35.  For tickets, call 419-246-8000, toll-free 800-348-1253 or visit www.toledosymphony.com

Shostakovich  Symphony No. 7 ( Leningrad)

Two significant anniversaries are celebrated in this powerful season-opening concert.  The renowned pianist Leon Fleisher brings his formidable musicianship to bear in Mozart’s Twelfth Piano Concerto, commemorating Mozart’s 250th birthday.  Stefan Sanderling leads the orchestra in Shostakovich’s towering Seventh Symphony, conceived while Shostakovich served in Russia’s Home Guard, facing the Nazi siege of his home city.   The ‘ Leningrad’ Symphony and its themes of courage and resistance in the face of adversity still resonate powerfully with audiences one hundred years after the great composer’s birth.  Tickets: $22 to $47.  For tickets, call 419-246-8000, toll-free 800-348-1253 or visit www.toledosymphony.com

Mozart              Symphony No. 35 (Haffner)

Two works by the French composer Maurice Ravel launch this series – his affectionate tribute to his compatriot Francois Couperin, and his virtuoso fantasy in gypsy-style, Tzigane.  Violinist Tai Murray makes her Toledo Symphony debut in this wildly popular violin showpiece.  Chelsea Tipton, II leads the orchestra in Mozart’s Haffner Symphony, originally written as the musical backdrop for a friend’s wedding.  One can imagine the procession of a bride to each of the three Marches that lead into the Symphony; indeed, the second of these was the Symphony’s original introduction.  Tickets: $29 to $33.  For tickets, call 419-246-8000, toll-free 800-348-1253 or visit www.toledosymphony.com
