Salon des Refusés Exhibition

The Salon des Refusés show, a long standing and well loved Toledo tradition for many years is an exhibit for art not accepted by the Toledo Area Artists Exhibition held each year in the Toledo Museum of Art and since its inception has earned a reputation for quality exhibitions among area art critics. This will be the fourth year that PRIZM Creative Community has sponsored the exhibition as a service to the community. “ Special thanks to The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo who is the host venue for this popular exhibit.” Being able to display the Salon show in close proximity to the Museum is an added convenience for art aficionados who make sure they attend both the Toledo Area Artist exhibition, as well as the Exhibition of rejected work in the Toledo area Salon des Refusés by PRIZM.

Toledo Opera presents: Don Giovanni

February 15th and 17th, 2013

This production sets the classic story in the 1950’s, and is a visually compelling new look at Don Giovanni, challenging the traditional approach to Mozart’s great work. It will allow our audiences to view this great masterpiece through a new lens. It will also move the company forward in the direction of innovation and creativity, and is viewed as important to establishing a new character for Toledo Opera – a company that respects the traditions of opera, but which is not afraid to challenge those traditions in an artistically satisfying way. The Toledo Opera is particularly pleased that this production will be conducted by Toledo Symphony Principal Conductor Stefan Sanderling. Maestro Sanderling and the TSO are playing an important role in advancing the health and artistic creativity of Toledo Opera. The production will feature an excellent cast led by acclaimed baritone Philip Cutlip as Don Giovanni.

7th Annual Glass City Beer Fest

Join us for the 7th annual Glass City Beerfest which will be held at a new larger site, the Lucas County Rec. Center in Maumee Ohio. Parking will be FREE. Now in its 7th year, the event has grown to nearly 1500 people in attendance! Our new venue will allow for more distributors, showcasing over 100 craft beers. The event will be held from 7:00-11:00 PM on 3/1/13. Tickets will be $30 purchased in advance or $35 at the door. A "hero" discount of $25 will be available for all military, police and firefighter personnel with appropriate ID. Spring Walleye Run

Late March into April

Walleye are present all year long in the Maumee River in relatively low numbers; however, the number of walleye dramatically increases during annual spawning runs up these tributaries from Lake Erie. The Maumee River, especially near Perrysburg is a favorite of fisherman. A variety of factors trigger the spawning run including: water temperature, river flow, and hours of daylight. Walleye spawning occurs anytime from mid-March through mid-April, but frequently the peak activity occurs the last week of March through the second week of April.

Annual Toledo Sister Cities International Festival

The afternoon and early evening event will feature food, dancing, music and other performances by participants celebrating cultures from around the world. Toledo is privileged to have sister cities in Spain, China, Hungary, Poland, Japan, Tanzania, Germany, Lebanon, Pakistan, India and Egypt, and additional sister cities are in the works. The festival will also feature local community groups. Last year, some 24 groups performed. An expanded list of local ethnic restaurants will serve international fare. World beers will be available at a pavilion, and vendors will be on hand to offer crafts and other goods. Activities are planned for children to enjoy; children under 10 will be free. Come see, hear, or eat samplings from different cultures and join together with some 2,000 participants in this celebration of international diversity!

Artomatic 419!

Artomatic 419! is the region’s largest non-juried, multi-media arts event. Held every-other year, the 2011 event saw 450 visual, performing, and literary artists participate, and nearly 10,000 people attend over the course of three consecutive Saturdays. Artomatic 419! seeks to empower both un-used and under-utilized space and the local arts community by enlivening buildings in and around downtown Toledo with art, music, poetry, dance, and more. Artomatic 419! is open to any Toledo-area artist on a first-come, first-served basis. The 2013 installment of Artomatic 419! will take place at 911 N. Summit Street in the former Metropolitan Distributing Building (two blocks north of Cherry Street/Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge). Artomatic 419! is presented by The Arts Commission in partnership with the local arts community. More than 100 volunteers pull together to make the event a success. Tree City Film Festival

A 50 hour film project is a fun and crazy weekend that allows a team to make a short movie; that is, to write, shoot, score, and edit their film and to submit it in a timely fashion to qualify for judging. Each team receives “particulars” that must be incorporated into their film to meet eligibility for judging. Once the films are accepted, they will be viewed by a panel of distinct judges. Awards in the amounts of $300, $150 and $100 will be given to the winning teams in select categories. The Tree City Film Festival will kick off the weekend for filming on Friday, March 8th, concluding on Sunday, March 10, 2013. The showing of selected short films will take place on Saturday, April 13th at locations throughout downtown Sylvania.

Medical Mutual Glass City Marathon

One of the fastest marathon courses in the Midwest, The Glass City Marathon will begin in the center of the University of Toledo campus heading northwest into the quiet neighborhoods of Old Orchard, Ottawa Hills, and Sylvania. A fast flat surface along the University Parks Trail is sure to provide ample shade and scenery concluding with a grand finish in the Glass Bowl Stadium. Events include the marathon, 5-person marathon relay, half-marathon and companion 5K. All courses are USATF certified.

First Siege 1813 (Fort Meigs Bicentennial)

May 5, 1813 marked the bloodiest day of fighting during the First Siege of Fort Meigs. Plan now to attend the special bicentennial commemoration of this crucial event. The actions at Fort Meigs on May 5, 1813 reverberated throughout Ohio and indeed, throughout the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, and the echos of that conflict can still be heard today. Join re-enactors from across North America who will recreate life at Fort Meigs in the Spring of 1813. See camp life activities, weapon demonstrations, battle recreations, and more! The Biggest Week in American Birding

National Train Day Toledo

Claire’s Day is a free family book festival held annually in honor of Claire Lynsey Rubini who passed away from a heart condition in 2000, when she was just ten years old. Claire’s Day embraces all of her favorite activities, including telling stories, dancing, making crafts, but most of all, reading. The Claire’s Day Inc. mission is to inspire children of all ages and their families to be lifelong readers through exposure to a variety of literary opportunities and experiences. Claire’s Day Inc. is a 501(c) 3organization, and through the efforts of a part-time executive director and volunteers, plans and coordinates a variety of events and activities the week leading up to the book festival. These events include visits to area schools by authors and illustrators; a grant program to benefit schools and libraries, and Claire’s Night, a fund-raising event for adults. Claire’s Day is held on the third Saturday in May at the Maumee branch of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, 501 River Road, Maumee, Ohio. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, May 18.

The race has been held nearly every year since then and, in keeping with the deed of gift, is raced at night. Although the race was originally configured as a triangle beginning and ending at the club or the Toledo Harbor Light, since 1981 the race has begun at the harbor light and ended at Put-in-Bay.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning with the Maumee High School marching band leading the way, followed by dance groups, classic cars, wild imaginative floats, singers, pets and costumed children on bikes.
