Breast Cancer Walk Set to Step-Off at Levis Commons

A few thousand pink-clad walkers are gearing up for this year's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

The event takes place Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Levis Commons, and is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Making strides isn't a race, but symbolizes the steps we take together to educate one another and work toward finding a cure.

Nationwide, nearly 700,000 walkers joined in the fight, raising $60 million dollars to support programs and efforts that make ending breast cancer that much more of a reality. The Northwest Ohio Making Strides walk is fairly new, but the walk has been going on nationally since 1993. This year's walk has already raised more than $50,000.

The 3.1 mile, non-competitive walk winds through the Levis Commons shopping center. There will also be some special events the day of the walk, including a tribute opportunity. Walkers can purchase a pink ribbon rubber duck to place in the Town Center's fountain to honor or memorialize someone with breast cancer. Each duck is $10 and can be purchased the day of the walk. There will also be activities placed throughout the walk route, raffle ticket opportunities, and a display of specially decorated bras to be voted on for top prize.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. For more information on how you can be a part of the walk, visit http://makingstrides.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=28162&pg=entry.
