TMA Derby Party to Be Unbridled Fun
Published: 05/04/2011 7:00 am By: Katie WarcholDainty ladies in obnoxiously intricate hats, dapper gentlemen dressed to the nines and a whole lot of mint juleps. It's derby time!
For the first time ever, a taste of Kentucky is coming to the Toledo Museum of Art this Saturday, May 7 in the form of a Kentucky Derby Party on the museum's grounds. Guests will meander throughout the Museum's Peristyle, outdoors on the terrace and in the sculpture garden, donning their derby best and knocking back a few beverages, many of which are sure to be mint juleps. Inside, "The most exciting two minutes in sports" will be simulcast on the peristyle stage, as well as plenty of live entertainment from Toledo's finest bands specializing in southern sounds.
Aside from the derby's signature drink, the museum's Derby Party is planning enough food to feed a wild stallion. As always, TMA Executive Chef Erika Rapp has some artfully prepared dishes in mind, as well as accompaning treats from Koto Buki, Flying Rhino Coffee and Chocolates, Class City Cafe and Grumpy's.
Guests are encouraged to wear their derby best, which will no doubt bring out some of Toledo's finest hat creations. While there is no contest for most outrageous headpiece, guests will quickly size-up others' hats to their own.
The event is more than a fun evening. It's also a fundraiser with proceeds going to support free school tours of The Egypt Experience exhibition. The TMA Cultivation Committee, which consists of young leaders in the Toledo area who help move the museum forward and bring it to new audiences, organized the event. Toledo.com is also a sponsor of the Kentucky Derby Party.
