The 1st Annual Rockershop All-Star Summit Convenes at Woodchuck's
by Ryan A. Bunch
Toledo has never quite been nationally
known for its music scene, but it's always had a strong one,
stretching back to when Art Tatum was quite literally blindly
reinventing the way the piano was played. A host of Toledoans have
carried the time honored, albeit often over-looked torch of Toledo's
music history, and a few less have taken it to places where it
ignited the world, leaving Toledo without much credit: The
aforementioned Tatum, John Hendricks' Vocalese (argued by some as the
road map to rapping), Boston launching one of the biggest rock debuts
in history, the co-founding of Sub Pop Records, and having their
tunes covered by The White Stripes (Henry & June/Soledad
Brothers), among others.
On Sunday, September 5, The First Annual Rockershop All-Star Summit will post up at Woodchuck's (224 S. Erie St.) for a day-long celebration of Toledo's rich musical scene, featuring some of it's current high profilers, a few gems from the past, and a handful of folks flying in from all over the country. Boasting 7 bands, a DJ, two jam sessions, and more than 20 local musicians -- past and present -- performing, the event is named for the Rockershop, a well-known local practice space among musicians, which has hosted several of these events before, including epic open jam sessions. This night, though, is for the people; an effort to bring the rich local scene we have here bubbling underground into the light of day ... until the sun goes down, and then, well, you know the old adage, "the freaks come out at night."
Represented in this showcase is a broad array of style and skill, yet all undoubtedly quivering with the sound of the armpit of America, Toledo, Ohio.
Enjoy.
