Although the industries of construction and manufacturing have been hit hard by the recession, other industries in Ohio are starting to recover and are offering new opportunities of employment. Between 2009 and 2011, the Ohio economy has been working to provide nearly 30,000 new jobs. With a steadily decreasing unemployment rate, many recent college graduates, as well as those who have been laid off or have remained unemployed during the recession, are once again hopeful of finding a job. Industries in Toledo, Ohio with especially promising job prospects include:
Health Care
Dental assistants and hygienists are both expecting an employment increase over 20 percent in Ohio making Toledo a great metropolitan area for current dental hygienists and assistants seeking employment. Medical assistants also in high demand and with 9 major hospitals and clinics within the city limits there are plenty of opportunities for such medical professionals to obtain employment. Both dental and medical assistants benefit from well-paying positions and upward mobility, and only need a 2-year degree to secure a position.
Information Technology
Many companies are striving to make themselves more visible both nationally and globally through the internet. As these companies move towards a greater incorporation of computers in their every day activities, information technology positions are growing in demand. Network systems and data communication analysts are expecting an employment increase in Ohio near 50 percent, while computer software engineers are expecting an employment increase from 20 to 40 percent depending on what field they choose to enter. Web designers are also in high demand, and those interested can easily obtain a 2-year degree from institutions such as Sanford Brown college, which will provide them with the hands-on experience needed to obtain employment.
Post-Secondary Education
With 13 colleges and universities located within or near the city, and flagship school the University of Toledo, Toledo is expecting an employment increase of nearly 20 percent for post-secondary educators by 2016. As many universities and colleges nationwide have had to limit or reduce employment, Toledo’s schools are actually in need of post-secondary educators providing great employment opportunities for those with Master’s or Doctoral degrees.
The industries of healthcare, IT, and post-secondary education may have some of the highest expected job growth rates in Ohio, but they aren’t the only industries on the rise. Other industries in Toledo that are currently experiencing job growth include financial services, administrative services, and management. As the recession lingers on in some states, Ohio has successfully created a detailed plan designed to lower unemployment rate and provide thousands of new jobs to its citizens.
