Live & Local: Joey & The Traitors, WEe, Lucian Townes Saturday at Frankie's

by Ryan A. Bunch

Frankie's
and local music are synonymous, or close enough. Like beer and pizza, steak and potatoes, or kegs and sorority girls, they're each great by themselves, but best enjoyed together.

Frankie's presents a real banger of local music showcase this Saturday as Joey and The Traitors, The Lucian Townes Band, and WEe take the stage together for the evening.

The jangly, Motown-inspired 60s garage-meets-70s punk of Joey & The Traitors is always a treat. The band manages to walk the fine line of classic homage and new indie freshness without a hiccup. Presented with equal parts of catchy pop hooks and raw rock-n-roll energy, The Traitors prove that they're one of Toledo's best every time they take the stage.

WEe is the brain-project of Jeff Loose, where he steps out from behind the drum kit of his former group Stylex and current assisting role in GoLab to present his own quirky take on the weird world of rock. Loose's compositions are oddly pop-friendly combinations of psychedelic garage rock, country-flavored melodies, and experimental mad-genius. Simply put – nobody does it like Jeff Loose, and that's the reason he's been a mainstay on the local scene longer than most.

Lucian Townes is a singer-songwriter with a distinct take on the genre. Elements of folk, rock, and country play freely in Townes' original tunes, which seem to almost exclusively explore the dark and brooding netherworld that dwells just below the surface in all of us.

Looking for a local pick-up on the music scene? Be sure to check out Joey & The Traitors, The Lucian Townes Band, and WEe at Frankie's Inner City (308 Main St.) on Saturday, January 21. 9 p.m. $5 at the door. www.frankiesinnercity.com
