Eye On Art | 04/10/2012
The University of Toledo’s Department of Art is hosting their third installment of Glitch, Hack, Play lecture and workshop series for the Spring of 2012. Each of the three visiting artists chosen for this semester work with a range of “new media,” from 3-D and experimental video, reworking electronics, sound generation & manipulation, to building custom games. Each artist in the series delivers a public lecture, and leads a hands-on workshop illustrating aspects of his artistic process the following day.The third and final presenter for Glitch, Hack, Play is Sam Sheffield. Mr. Sheffield is an artist and tinkerer whose recent solo and collaborative art entertainment works incorporating game-like simulations and playful, highly physical interfaces have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Sam lives in Baltimore, Maryland where he also works as Adjunct Faculty in the Interaction Design and Art Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
His public lecture will be held Thursday, April 19th at 2pm in Toledo Museum of Art’s Little Theatre. The workshop, Build Your Own Retro Game With Flixel, is scheduled for Friday, April 20th at 1pm at University of Toledo’s Carlson Library Computer Lab, Room CL 1025.
The workshop will focus on building a simple, arcade-style video game using the Flixel game engine for Actionscript 3. In addition to building a small game, participants will also be given the chance to test out their creations using pre-built physical interfaces ranging from the standard to the absurd.
The lecture and workshop are free and open to the public. Pay parking for the lecture is available in any of TMA’s lots, and is free for Museum members.
