Toledo Rowing Club Providing Opportunities to Learn to Row
Daily Dose | 05/10/2012
Rowing is a total body workout which exercises all the major muscle groups of the body with no impact on the joints, a practically perfect method for the youth of our community to build self-confidence, enhance inner strength, enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded individuals, and learn a skill that could translate into a better chance to pursue higher education. Adults can benefit as well by using rowing for fitness and aerobic/anaerobic conditioning. Toledo Rowing Club has four learn-to-row programs during the months of June and July.
National Learn To Row Day ? Saturday, 2 June 8:13am ? 12:18pm
The first is National Learn To Row Day (NLTRD) on Saturday, 2 June, in partnership with the United States Rowing Association and Concept2, the makers of the Concept2 Indoor Rowing Machine ? more commonly known as the “Erg”. NLTRD is FREE, open to the public, and will give everyone an opportunity to learn the rowing stroke on an Erg, row a very stable rowing shell on the end of a tether, and row in an 8-man shell with six experienced oarsmen and coxswain (the mouthy one who steers). Boathouse doors open at 8:13 am and stay open until 12:18 pm. We encourage those who are physically challenged to participate in those sessions which will be dedicated to learning Adaptive Rowing skills this same day.
SumPro/Sweep begins Monday, 4 June at 5:28pm
The following Monday, 4 June at 5:28 pm, SumPro/Sweep begins. Each afternoon Monday ? Thursday for five weeks until 5 July, participants will learn how to “Sweep”. Each person has one oar and sits in a boat with seven other rowers and a coxswain. Typically students come two evenings a week but there is no additional charge should they choose to come three or all four evenings each week. The fee is $150 and that includes membership in the club until 1 March 2013. At the end of the course the students will be ready in terms of skill level to join the masters’ rowers. To register, go to www.toledorowing.org or www.regattacentral.com.
SumPro/Sculling begins Monday, 9 July at 5:28pm
On Monday, 9 July, at 5:28 pm SumPro/Sculling classes begin. In sculling each rower has two oars, one in each hand. The objective of this class is to get participants comfortable enough with their rowing skills such that each can be certified to go out on the river in a one or two person shell. This class lasts until 26 July, has the same format as SumPro/Sweep with a fee of $105. The rowing club encourages those who are physically challenged to participate in these sessions which will be dedicated to learning Adaptive Rowing skills during the same three week period. To register, go to www.toledorowing.org or www.regattacentral.com.
Youth Rowing Camp begins Monday, 9 July at 9am
For the youngsters age 11(and starting 6th grade) to 14 Toledo Rowing Club will have a two week Youth Rowing Camp starting Monday, 9 July. The camp will run from 9am until noon weekdays for two weeks. During that period the young athletes will progress from the basics of sweep rowing (one oar per person) to specific rowing techniques and an introduction to racing on the water. It is a fun and relaxed way to be exposed to, and participate in, this team sport. Should any of the youngsters decide to row when they get to high school, they will find clubs at Anthony Wayne, Central Catholic, Notre Dame, St. Francis de Sales, St. John’s Jesuit, and St. Ursula. For rowers who are not attending one of the above listed high schools Toledo Metropolitan Rowing Club is the club for them. To register, go to www.toledorowing.org or www.regattacentral.com.
