Red Benefit 5 Raises Money For Cystic Fibrosis Foundationby Emily Rippe
Five years ago, Anna Schaeffer looked to her band Pitch Red and said, "We can do something with this. We can make a difference."
And while the idea to use one's musical powers for good is nothing new, what developed from that conversation is now a multi-media showcase featuring numerous bands and visual artists hailing from the Glass City.
The Red Benefit 5 is scheduled for Saturday, September 1 at Threshold Church beginning at 7 p.m. The event showcases the musical abilities of The Strong Talk, Gold, Bloody Holly and Pitch Red (with more bands TBA). Artists Vivian Ivy, Nick Runckel, Vince Garcia and Nick Petrillo will be selling their artwork at the show. Admission is $5 per person, and proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
"Cystic Fibrosis has always been something close to my heart," Schaeffer said. "I have a personal history with the charity because I lost a cousin at a very young age to CF."
Last year, the Red Benefit raised over $1,000 for the cause, and since its inception in 2008, Schaeffer and company have sent thousands of dollars to the foundation to help find a cure.
Schaeffer states that none of this would be possible without the support of the Toledo community. "We are grateful to everyone who has donated their resources and talents to the show," she said.
This includes all the bands playing for free; artists donating a portion of their sales to the charity; Threshold Church donating their space for the evening; a sound and lights crew working for free; and even designers and promoters spreading the word to make the event a huge success.
"The Red Benefit really is the type of show used to showcase Toledo local musicians and artists, so their fanbases have been very supportive, as well as the Cystic Fibrosis community," Schaeffer said. "Throughout the years, I have had people come up to me and say things like, 'My sister has been fighting CF for 15 years and she is too sick to be here, but I think it's amazing what you guys are doing.' Things like that make it all worth it."
Show your support by attending the Red Benefit 5 on September 1 at Threshold Church, located at 3059 Bancroft, next to the UT bookstore. For more information, visit http://theredbenefit.tumblr.com/ or RSVP to the event on Facebook.
