Daily Dose  |  04/10/2013

On Wednesday, April 24, United Way of Greater Toledo, Toledo Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library will host a screening of The Line, a groundbreaking new documentary revealing the current struggles many Americans are facing who are at or below the poverty line.

The free screening is scheduled from 5:30 ? 8 p.m. on the second floor in the McMaster Center of Main Library, 325 Michigan St. Refreshments will be provided, as well as free underground parking, which is accessible off Adams Street.

The documentary tells the gripping, real life story of four Americans who have each fallen on hard times in their own unique way, with surroundings ranging from the Gulf Coast and the Carolinas to the suburbs and west side of Chicago.

Hugh Grefe, Toledo LISC Executive Director said, "Across our community, and especially in the core city, Toledo's residents are trying to overcome the effects of poverty. Obviously this has become even more difficult during the economic recession.  LISC is working with United Way and numerous community-based partners to help families take the steps to financial stability.  We know that sustainable change for Toledo's households means lasting success for all of Toledo."

Karen Mathison, President & CEO of United Way of Greater Toledo added:  “Too many individuals, families, and children in our community struggle with poverty and the harsh reality that ensues. We know that without financial stability, it is exponentially more difficult for families to provide for their children, ensuring they have the best education, health, and chance at success. Our hope is to spread awareness and engage the community in the things we all can do to improve stability and make our community a better place for everyone.”

Information about free community resources will also be on hand at the event.
