About the Artist:
Matika Wilbur is a member of the Tulalip and Swinomish Tribes, and was raised on the Swinomish Reservation in the Pacific Northwest. She studied photography at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Montana and received a bachelor's degree from Brooks Institute of Photography in California. She has exhibited at Royal British Columbia Museum of Fine Arts, the Nantes Museum of Fine Arts in France, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, the Kittredge Gallery at the University of Puget Sound, and Tacoma Art Museum.Her work has also been featured at the Seattle Museum of Art on two occasions, including a solo exhibition in 2011.
In this first Midwest showing, River House Arts is featuring selections from three of Matika's essays including We Are One People- character study portraits of Coast Salish Elders; iHuman - images of Swinomish tribal members interwoven with sacred cedar bark; and We Emerge- a photographic meditation on the historical and prevailing stereotypes of Native Peoples in American popular culture.
Matika will be discussing these essays during her Thursday talk at the River House. She'll also be presenting some the work she's just completed for Project 562, her groundbreaking effort to photograph members of each of the 562 federally recognized tribes in the U.S.
