Grossology Premieres at Imagination Station

Keeping Up With Kids  |  05/17/2013

Sometimes it’s stinky; sometimes it’s crusty; and sometimes it’s slimy. Explore why your body produces mushy, oozy, crusty, scaly and stinky gunk at Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body during its appearance at Imagination Station. Based on the best-selling book Grossology, this exhibition tells you the good, the bad and the downright ugly about runny noses, body odor and much more. Grossology will be featured at Imagination Station until September 2, 2013.

Take a “Tour du Nose” to explore 10 nasal features, including how your snoot acts as an air filter, a smell sensor and a mucus producer. Play the pinball game “Gas Attack” by scoring off bumpers dressed up as food items that cause gas. Mimic the buildup of acid indigestion by causing the “Burp Machine” to release a giant belch. Explore the role of the kidney in a virtual reality experience in “Urine: The Game.” Take a ride on the GI slide, climb a large-scale replica of human skin, discover other mysterious ways your body’s biology does what it needs to do to keep you healthy.

In addition to this exciting exhibition about the gross things your body does, there will be special events over the summer guaranteed to make the kids say, eww ? Coooool!

”Gross Anatomy” Artwork on Display ? now ? September 2nd, 2013
A sampling of Artwork from the University of Toledo Lithography ART 3120 and Anatomy classes is on display at Imagination Station until September 2013. Along with the help of their instructors, Arturo Rodriguez and Ben Pond, the students utilized lithography as the base for their initial drawing and then embellished the pages with additional drawing media, which was conceptually based on “Gray’s Anatomy”, an English-language human anatomy textbook originally written by Henry Gray. The art they created will be combined to create bound books, both to be donated to the library at the UT Medical Campus and the Toledo Museum of Art in the Center for Visual Arts.

Grossology is sponsored by the Ohio Lottery.

Grossology is a collaboration between Science World, Advanced Exhibits, and Grossology author Sylvia Branzei. As a teacher, writer, curriculum designer and microbiologist, Branzei explains the concepts of Grossology as a learning tool. “This is science in disguise,” she says. “If we teach students in their own words, they’ll understand better and actually learn something.
