Hot Glass | Cool Music Collaboration Celebrates Music & Glass

The Arts Commission and Toledo Symphony, joined by Hot Glass | Cool Music Honorary Chair Randy Oostra, ProMedica President and CEO, invite the public’s participation in a series of events to honor the artistic and musical talent of our community, and to introduce the City of Toledo to an exciting new partnership to launch in 2017.  “This partnership is a meaningful way to bring together art and music for this community. It reflects our history and our future in the arts,” said Oostra.

As in years past, the Hot Glass Gala and Auction exhibits some of the world’s most talented studio glass artists, as well as introducing the “up and coming” talent in the field. This year, The Arts Commission is joined by the Toledo Symphony to connect all things music with all things glass celebrating Toledo’s heritage as the Glass City, highlighting its history as the birthplace of the studio glass movement, and connecting that history to its equally rich musical legacy.  Proceeds benefit the programming and services of The Arts Commission and the Toledo Symphony.

Community Historical Context

“In 1962, the Studio Glass Movement was born in a garage on the Toledo Museum of Art grounds. Harvey Littleton, a pottery instructor, received the support of then-director Otto Wittmann to conduct a workshop to explore ways artists might create works from molten glass in their own studios, rather than in factories. A prototype “studio” furnace was built in the TMA garage, but for the first three days of the workshop all attempts to fuse molten glass failed. Finally, Dominick Labino, then vice president and director of research at Johns Manville Fiber Glass, showed up with advice on furnace construction, and with glass marbles that melted. Harvey Leafgreen, a retired glassblower from Libbey Glass, was then able to demonstrate his craft. Later that summer, many participants returned for a second workshop. In 1969, the Toledo Museum of Art constructed the Glass-Crafts Building, becoming the first museum to build a facility and studio specifically designed for teaching glass working techniques. Today, the TMA Glass Pavilion is home to both one of the most important glass collections in the world, and to a variety of spaces and techniques for making glass in the studio.” (http://www.toledomuseum.org/glass-pavilion/glass-at-tma/studio-glass-movement/) The community will celebrate the 10th anniversary of this architectural icon in 2016.

Since the early 1990’s, The Arts Commission has hosted Hot Glass, a gala auction event that gathers original creations of leading glass artists from around the world. Presently, the biennial event raises more than $50,000 to benefit The Arts Commission activities and programs, paying more than $70,000 to artists for their works. Last year, ProMedica led the collaborative fundrais­ing event, Chefs Uncorked, which raised funds for ProMedica pro­grams, The Arts Commission and Toledo Symphony. This year, Pro­Medica has committed to lend its support to the Hot Glass | Cool Music collaboration, as an outgrowth of the Chefs collaboration, and to advocate and support a larger community celebration of cre­ative activity in the arts in 2017.

The birthplace of jazz pianist Art Tatum, and legendary singers Anita Baker and Jon Hendricks, Toledo has also hosted performances by iconic musicians including Igor Stravinsky, Mstislav Rostropovich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Aretha Franklin.  Established in 1943, the Toledo Symphony has constantly aimed to bring excellent music to the largest possible audience, and was honored as one of the six invited orchestras for Carnegie Hall’s inaugural Spring for Music Festival.  Though it makes its home at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theatre, each season features numerous performances in venues throughout the Northwest Ohio region, exemplifying its commitment to be the region’s most prominent and accessible musical institution.  The Symphony enters the 2016/17 season under the leadership of incoming President/CEO Zak Vassar.

Vision

The Arts Commission and the Toledo Symphony, with support from ProMedica, will create an annual, multi-day event, celebrat­ing Toledo’s heritage as the Glass City, especially as the birthplace of the Studio Glass Movement. In 2016, The Arts Commission and the Toledo Symphony ex­pand on The Arts Commission’s historically successful Hot Glass fundraising event with a series of events, September to Octo­ber, culminating in the Hot Glass|Cool Music gala auction event. In 2017, the event will expand to a community celebration on Sum­mit Street, connected to the waterfront, highlighting original works of art in glass and music, and offering significant awards to artists for creative works and activities in both areas.

Hot Shots returns! This intoxicating event is created for those new to glass. Hot Shots is an opportunity to preview glass, engage in food and bourbon tastings, and hear the musicians of the Toledo Symphony play music inspired by the Hot Glass exhibition.  Fourteen local glassblowers have worked with local bartenders and venues to create signature vessels that reflect the character and flavor of the venues.  The public may view the vessels on September 15 at the represented venues during the ArtLoop and vote on a People’s Choice award. The vessels will be auctioned at Hot Shots. Over 21 only. Free parking in the Edison Building garage. Catering by Tony Packos and bourbon tastings by Veritas Cork and Craft.  “Murder Set in Glass” Murder Mystery

Can you figure out the culprit? The storied Toledo Club is the setting for this original murder mystery experience! Join our host Lord Chauncy Cholmondley-Blackstone, his former servant turned Libbey Glass employee, and the world’s largest piece of cut glass.   This interactive event promises intrigue, fun, and exploration of the Toledo Club in all her glory.  The “who dun it” is set in 1905 so time period costumes are encouraged, but not required. Bring a team or join one at the party. Ticket price includes lite bites and a cocktail.

“It was as though Philip [Glass] had fed into my voice…but somehow had arrived a lot nearer to the gutfeeling of what I was trying to do.” – David Bowie on Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 4, “Heroes”.

David Bowie’s combined influences from world music, experimental avant-garde and rock and roll, redefined the future of popular music and served as an inspiration and point of departure for composer Philip Glass. The Toledo Symphony Orchestra performs Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 4, “Heroes” accompanied by a high-resolution film above the orchestra depicting the lifecycle of a blown glass vessel inspired by the music. Embracing the tradition of blown glass in Toledo, this captivating multimedia presentation showcases glass artists of Gathered Glassblowing Studio. The vessel will be auctioned off following the performance.

Pre-concert entertainment features BGSU music composition students and glass artists in a unique Hot Glass | Cool Music collaboration between BGSU music and glass students. Composition students will perform on glass instruments made by the BGSU fine arts department.

The Hot Glass Gala Auction once again assembles the works of established glass artists and emerging artists in one place to showcase the variety and possibilities of this art form. Over 100 works by 90 or more artists will be on display from September 15-October 20, with the final auction to be held on October 20. The gala auction evening includes heavy grazing, performances by Toledo Symphony musicians, and a live auction of the most popular works in the exhibition. Free parking in the Edison Building garage. Dress to the NINE’s – Your Way
September 9, 6PM, Hensville Park
Hot Glass | Cool Music kicks off at Hensville on Friday, September 9, with the first annual Dress to the NINE’s – Your Way.  NINE at Hensville will host this premier block party that will feature 9 performance areas with 9 different themes  – all for $9!  The event will showcase local musical acts on six different stages plus live glassblowing, flameworking and an interactive mosaic demonstration at three separate performance areas. The Toledo Symphony Orchestra will headline the entertainment lineup with a live concert at the Hensville Park main stage at 8 p.m. $5 of each ticket sold in advance by The Arts Commission or Toledo Symphony will benefit the selling organization.  Visit theartscommission.org or toledosymphony.com for more information.

River House Arts presents HUSH-ex with artworks by Megan Biddle, Amber Cowan, Jessica Jane Julius and Sharyn O'Mara.  Exhibition runs September 15 - October 22, 2016, at 425 Jefferson Avenue.
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 15, 6PM. Working over the course of nearly two years, the artists, who are also colleagues on the glass faculty at Tyler School of Art, Temple University, have been creating visually and conceptually diverse works in glass as well as installations, sculptures and drawings. 

Toledo Lucas County Public Library Main Library, 325 Michigan, welcomes the public to view its own glass treasures during regular business hours.  A Dale Chihuly sculpture titled Reeds can be seen on the first-floor Wintergarden area. A black marble plinth with a wood underbelly supports 23 red glass spikes ranging from 3-8 feet tall.  The library is also home to a Vitrolite mural highlighting the various fields of knowledge and literary characters.
