UT Spring Festival of New Music March 29-April 1

The University of Toledo Department of Music will celebrate its 40th Annual Spring Festival of New Music, Wednesday, March 29 through Saturday, April 1. The festival is a series of concerts celebrating contemporary living composers. This year’s guest composer is Jake Runestad, whose work will be featured on some of the concerts. He will also conduct the UT High School Honor Choir on the last concert of the series. The Festival also features a collaboration of the National Arab Orchestra's Takht Ensemble, with the University of Toledo's Jazz Organ Trio and Vocalist Dr. Ellie Martin.
 
2017 SPRING FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSIC

America the Beautiful* - featuring the National Arab Orchestra's Takht Ensemble, the UT Jazz Organ Trio and Vocalist Dr. Ellie Martin
Wednesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. (CPA Recital Hall)
Concert will include a mix of Arab music, American jazz, and other musical styles. A rare opportunity to hear traditional Arab pieces blended with improvisational, instrumental and vocal jazz. Featuring UT's UTrio: Tad Weed, organ/piano; Jay Rinsen Weik, guitar;
Dr. Olman E. Piedra, drums; and Dr. Ellie Martin, vocals in collaboration with the NAO Takht Ensemble: Michael Ibrahim - Nay/Director; Emad Ibrahim - Violin; Victor Ghannam - Qanun; Abboud Kayyalli - Oud; Dr. Gurshuran "Yash" Singh Sandhu - Riqq; Roger Kashou - Tableh; Jonathon Hammonds - Bass; and Usama Baalbaki - Vocals.

UT Student & Faculty Chamber Ensemble*
Thursday, March 30 at 7 p.m. (CPA Recital Hall)
At this concert, the winners of the 2017 Craig’s Keyboards/UT Student Composer Contest will be announced.
The concert will also feature the UT Faculty Woodwind Quintet performing a work by Samuel Adler.

UT High School Honor Choir with Guest Composer, Jake Runestad
Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m. (Doermann Theater, University Hall)
The best singers from area high schools will perform in concert with the UT Concert Chorale, under the baton of guest composer, Jake Runestad. A highlight of the concert will be the performance of a song co-created by Runestad and the high school students.
