Claire's Day Festival Returns to Maumee

Keeping Up With Kids  |  05/18/2017 3:00 pm

Claire's Day presented by O-I, Northwest Ohio's Children's Book Festival comes to Maumee, Ohio this year on May 20 from 9am - 4pm for what might be one of the largest for the 16 year old event. Held annually in honor of Claire Rubini who passed away from a heart condition in 2000 when she was just ten years old, the event embraces her favorite activities: making crafts, dancing, and above all, reading! You are invited!
Claire's Day will feature the expanded Creation Station Goes Green, our hands on-activity area including science, math and literacy. Our friends from The Toledo Zoo, Toledo Lucas County Public Libraries Ready to Read van, Toledo Museum of Art and WGTE's Raising Readers van join us this year!
All activities are FREE and the public is welcome to join in the fun. "This year's event is shaping up to be excellent! We're thrilled to be celebrating literacy on such a grand scale. We are so happy that we have had successful first year events in Defiance and Toledo, and look forward to celebrating 16 years in Maumee," says Executive Director, Jeanette Hrovatich. "Claire's legacy will continue to shine in the children and families this event serves."
The highlight of this year's Claire's Day will be Claire's Awards for Reading Excellence (C.A.R.E. Awards) honoring nearly 990 children who have increased their literacy skills. Presented by O-I and sponsored by Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Resolute Bank, Rehmann, The Anderson's, Lucas County Prosecutors Office, Toledo Spring, Rotary and William Vaughan the children will be honored in a ceremony with all of the pomp and circumstance of graduation. Certificates, a book to take home and authors ready to sign them are all part of the celebration.
According to Co-founder and Claire's dad, Brad Rubini, "not only are children being recognized for their increased reading skills, they are celebrating literacy, visiting our beautiful libraries (many for the first time) and meeting authors in person who take time to autograph books. It's exciting to see the children's enthusiasm for more learning."
Speaking of books...authors/illustrators will be on hand with their books for sale too. The public can come meet the authors, spend time with them during "sit and learn" and also take photos, and get signed autographs. Ice Restaurant and Catering joins the fun festival foods! Bring a little money for these items as well as $4.00 for a 2017 Claire's Day T-shirt.
