On Sunday, October 29 Toledo School for the Arts will present Songs for Our Sister: Hats off to Ella, Celebrating 100 Years.
Celebrating Ella Fitzgerald’s birthday, the concert will feature Atla and Matt DeChamplain. The duo from Connecticut specialize in the music of Fitzgerald and will be joined on stage by several well-known local musicians including Jeff Halsey (BGSU Jazz Faculty), and Dr. Olman Piedra (UT Jazz Faculty). “Ella represents absolute musicianship and artistry:  impeccable technique, gorgeous tone, brilliant improvisation,” said Atla. “It's a privilege to present music in her honor and celebrate her legacy."
The concert will also feature vocal jazz students from Toledo School for the Arts.  “The musical talent of the TSA students has been consistently stellar,” said Committee member Susan Hartman Muska. "That is why I am so pleased to help support this outstanding scholarship program."
Songs for Our Sister supports the Mary Ann Russo Jazz Scholarship for Toledo School for the Arts students who wish to participate in private vocal jazz lessons taught by Dr. Lee Ellen Martin (UT & BGSU Vocal Jazz Instructor) as well as tuition to the New York Voices Vocal Jazz Camp at Ithica College. The scholarship also provides a college scholarship for a TSA Senior.
The concert will take place Sunday, October 29, at 2pm in The Flying Pig Café, located in the Toledo School for the Arts, 333 14th Street.  Complimentary snacks and beverages will be offered, and one-of-a-kind hats designed by local celebrities -for wearing or displaying- will be auctioned off.
