Drawn, Cut & Layered: The Art of Werner Pfeiffer Photo

Drawn, Cut & Layered: The Art of Werner Pfeiffer

@ Toledo Museum of Art

Febraury 6th thru May 3rd, 2015

For more than 50 years, Werner Pfeiffer (German-American, born 1937) has experimented with the multiple uses of paper as both a canvas and a structural material. Much of his work as a sculptor, printmaker and painter suggests a fascination with machines and machine-like constructions. His drawings are schematic, his dimensional works project into space claiming their own territory and his complex artist books have moving parts. He is fascinated by puzzles and contradictions, metaphors and wordplay, and this curiosity serves in turn to inspire works that are thought-provoking in themselves. A prodigious artist, Pfeiffer’s works on paper have been shown and collected internationally. The nearly 200 limited-edition works of art in this exhibition include drawings, dimensional prints, 3D collage and sculptural and experimental books. Free admission.

Widely regarded as the greatest American opera, Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah is set in 1950s rural Tennessee. Its unabashedly neo-romantic music beautifully evokes the opera’s Appalachian setting. The traveling preacher Olin Blitch tries to save her soul, but his actions lead to tragedy for them both. This semi-staged production, featuring still and moving digital projections, will be the first in a series of American operas from the 20th and 21st centuries presented by Toledo Opera.

The largest single exhibit in the new Aquarium will be 93,000 gallons with the combined water volume of all the exhibits totaling 210,000 gallons! Where the majority of our previous exhibits were freshwater, the new Aquarium will be home to three times as many marine species as freshwater which will dramatically increase the diversity of color, physical characteristics and scientific interest.  The new Aquarium’s theme is, “Go beneath the surface and experience a fascinating underwater realm—how we depend upon and impact it.”

@ Adams Street Corridor

September 18th, 2015

PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world. The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!

Adams Street Zombie Crawl VI

@ Adams Street (downtown)

October 23rd, 2015

The eerie season of swarms and storms is back upon us and that means it's time to start storing food for winter. What food, you may ask? Well ... BRAINS of course!

Slop and stumble your living corpse onto the livest dead street in the city, Adams Street, in the untold catacombs of the Uptown Neighborhood. Join a cast of graveyard comrades to wreak havoc onto the street and in the bars as you terrorize the dim-witted living ... and your liver too! Last year, more than 1,000 bodies crawled from the shadows to chew on souls and barstools alike. This is the biggest zombie bash of the year - don't miss out! You and your undead friends are cordially invited to drag your limp remains to Wesley's Bar at 8:30 p.m. At roughly 9:30 p.m., the march for brains and beers will slumber slowly up the center of the street on a bar crawl that will curdle your grandmother's blood.
