Event Details:

Toledoan, James Seed, enjoyed a productive career as a professional cartoonist, illustrator, and Art teacher, during his lifetime. The Toledo History Museum is proud to display several of the Christmas cards he created from 1986 -2007 for his personal greetings to family and friends. Museum visitors can view the collection which includes much of the original artwork through the first week of January.

Born in Toledo in 1927, Seed was the son of Syrian immigrants. He gained recognition for his artistic skills as a student at Sherman Elementary School and later at Woodward High School. Encouraged by his teachers, Seed enrolled in art classes for illustrating and cartooning while in high school. He also began his professional career at this time by working as a background inker on a comic strip called Cranberry Boggs by cartoonist, Don Dean. Seed continued his work on this venture while attending the University of Toledo. He contributed to many popular comic strips throughout the 1940’s and 50’s, including Steve Roper and Jane Arden.

During his later years, he worked as a studio illustrator and photo retoucher. Seed also taught at various local institutions including Penta Vocational School, the Toledo Museum of Art and Whitmer High School. Seed passed away in 2010.
