Event Details:
25 years ago this week, friends and I set up shop with scissors and tape in the back of the Chicago video store where I worked and over a few nights put together the very first issue of FOUND Magazine. We Xeroxed 800 copies at a Kinko's, silk-screened 800 covers, and collated and hand-decorated each copy at my apartment. Then on June 10, 2001, we held a release party where each person went home with a copy of the original FOUND Magazine.
All I wanted for our FOUND zine was to create a mechanism for people to share their great finds with each other, a celebration of our shared humanity. "People watching on paper," as one friend described it. But in the years that followed, FOUND caught on in unexpected ways and became, as I see it, a triumph of DIY publishing and community-based art.
Now, 25 years later, I'm THRILLED to be bringing our FOUND Magazine live show back on tour to one of our favorite FOUND hubs — TOLEDO, OHIO — for one very special night — Friday, June 12th, 7:00 PM at Dream Louder, 710 S. St Clair Street. It will be a night of stories, music, Found magic, and festivity alongside old friends, new friends, and kindred spirits. We'd LOVE to see you there!
At these unique shows, I share the latest hilarious and heartbreaking found notes and letters that have been sent in to us from across the country and around the world — plus some all-time favorites — and also share stories from my work on public radio's This American Life. Plus some other new surprises planned just for this show.
I'm traveling with legendary Michigan musician and activist Seth Bernard. His music is often compared to Neil Young and Eddie Vedder, and The New Yorker's Bill McKibben says, "[Seth's] music not only swings, rocks, and grooves — it matters. It's the voice of a real community, with a sound and a message the world needs to hear."
The L.A. Times calls our FOUND Live show "exhilarating, inspiring, and utterly engaging," The New York Times has called it "electrifying," and The New Yorker declares it "unexpected as a tumbleweed."
Whether it's your first time joining us, or you've been many times before, this will be a memorable and magical event. THANK YOU for swinging through, bringing friends, and helping us spread the word! In today's fractured media landscape we rely on word-of-mouth more than ever, and we promise that anyone you bring will long remember this outing.
Tickets are $10 - 20 (sliding scale) and may be available at the door but our shows often sell out.
Thanks so much — and hope to see you soon!
