The Valentine, in partnership with Actors Collaborative Toledo, is proud to present "Crumbs From the Table of Joy," by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, June 1-3 and 8-10, for six performances.

In 1950, Jackie Robinson was playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers, having broken the "color barrier" in 1947. In 1948, President Truman issued an executive order desegregating the military. Malcolm X becomes a minister of the Nation of Islam in 1952. In 1951, an African American minister, Father Divine, calls for reparations to be paid to the descendants of slaves. In Washington DC, the term "McCarthyism" is born. And in 1950, Godfrey moves his two daughters, Ernestine and Ermina, to Brooklyn, having heard the call of Father Divine's church.

"Crumbs From the Table of Joy" takes the perspective of Ernestine, who is seventeen years old. This is a complicated year in her life. Her father, Godfrey, has moved the family from the south to Brooklyn, where she and her sister, Ermina, are having trouble fitting in. Her free-spirited aunt has recently re-entered their lives, causing trouble whenever she appears. Then there's the matter of her new German step-mother. "She white!" "Crumbs From the Table of Joy" is a majority local African American cast.

"I think Lynn Nottage is one of the best playwrights working today," said Jeremy Allen, Co-Director with Elizabeth Cottle for this presentation. "She has a real knack for exploring serious subjects with humor and humanity. It's really an honor to get to produce her work."

Opening night is Friday, June 1 at 8 PM. The production run includes performances at 8 PM on June 2, 8 and 9 with Sunday matinee performances at 2 PM on June 3 and 10, 2018. All performances are staged in the Studio A Black Box Theatre with entrance and box office (opening one hour before curtain) off of Adams St., just around the corner from The Valentine main entrance. Tickets for all performances are $20. Student pricing, with valid ID, is $10. Purchase in advance by calling 419-242-2787,
or online here.

Co-Directed by Elizabeth Cottle and Jeremy Allen, "Crumbs From the Table of Joy" is a drama set in 1950 in two acts. The cast features Melody Orlu and Ziyaan Nirruddin, as well as Alan Owens, Crystal Adams, and Mackenzie Baumhower. All of the actors but Mackenzie are making their Valentine Theatre Studio A debut.
