The University of Toledo's School of Visual and Performing Arts presents a dialogue focused on Multi-Sensory Literacy and Learning. Daily, we are bombarded by a cacophony of stimuli signaling each of our senses. Consider the ubiquitous cell phone–there's an app for that! Most often, we involuntarily react to our senses without fully engaging the experience. How can we develop a fuller understanding of our sensory messaging systems, using them to enhance our human experience? What strategies and educational approaches can be used to heighten our sensory awareness, improve our sensory literacy, and enhance our learning?

Our featured speaker is Dr. Sara Diamond, CEO and President of OCAD University, Ontario – "the University of the Imagination." Diamond is a researcher in media arts history and policy, visual analytics and has created wearable technologies, mobile experiences and media art. Diamond was honored with a 1992 retrospective at the National Gallery of Canada, represented Canada in festivals and biennials, and her works reside in collections such as the MoMA in New York City and the National Gallery of Canada. She was recently honored as one of Canada’s 150 leading women.

Lance Gharavi, Director of Theatre at Arizona State Univeristy, an experimental artist, scholar, and an early pioneer in the field of digital performance is the Highlighted Speaker. The day is rounded out with a host of presenters from community arts organizations, local school districts, and regional universities and colleges, including: Penn State, Youngstown State, Oberlin, and the Univesity of Toledo.
