Cancer Center to host lymphedema education class July 3

An estimated three to five million Americans suffer from lymphedema. There is no known cure for the condition, which causes swelling of the extremities, but it can be effectively treated.

The Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center at The University of Toledo Medical Center is offering Understanding Lymphedema, a series of classes for anyone who is at risk for or diagnosed with lymphedema. Lymphedema occurs when the lymph system is damaged or blocked. Common causes are lymph node removal, radiation, trauma, or vascular insufficiency. Lymphedema can also be heredity.

“Whether you want to learn more about treatment, get advice on coping with side effects or learn about self-care, this class is for you,” said Renee Schick, manager of Renee’s Survivor Shop located at the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center that sells lymphedema therapy products

Experienced lymphedema therapists from throughout the community will teach the classes. Topics will include an overview of the lymphatic system, reducing your risk for lymphedema, and how to treat the effects of lymphedema with exercise, compression and massage and coping strategies

The class will be held Wed., July 3. Registration and refreshments begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the class at 6 p.m. There is no charge to attend, but reservations are required by calling 419.383.5243.
