Climate Change: Causes, Consequences, and Call to Action, by Bob Clark-Phelps

Climate change is constantly in the news, and the number of people expressing concern about it is increasing, with roughly 60% of the population saying they are very or somewhat worried. In spite of these trends, there is currently no federal policy to address climate change.

In this talk, we will briefly review the causes of climate change. We will explore a few consequences of climate change locally and globally. In Ohio, changes include the shift in our hardiness zone, loss of numerous bird species, and an increase in the frequency of harmful algal blooms. Global consequences to date include the bleaching and death of half the corals in the Australian Great Barrier Reef, flooding, heat waves, drought, and loss of glaciers. The United Nations panel on climate change recently reported that these impacts are happening faster than previously expected, driving new urgency to address this growing crisis.
