Join new members of the Maritime Archaeology Survey Team at their annual meeting and dinner program. This dinner is open to everyone! Our keynote speaker will be Wayne Lusardi, the Michigan State Underwater Archaeologist and he will be presenting on archaeological investigations of aircraft in the Great Lakes

Aircraft Wrecks in the Great Lakes
Over 500 aircraft were lost or wrecked in the Great Lakes beginning in the late 19th century. They represent a variety of historic vessel types including balloons, biplanes, propellers and jets, and are equally divided between civilian/commercial and military aircraft. Many have been found in recent years; some have been recovered while others remain on the lake bottoms and are available for archaeological investigation. In 2015, Michigan State Maritime Archaeologist Wayne Lusardi led a team of volunteers that surveyed and documented a World War II era P-39 Airacobra lost with a Tuskegee Airman pilot in Lake Huron. This aircraft wreck and others like it have provided valuable information on our aviation history and site formation processes.
