Your ZIP Code matters. It's not just an address, it's an identity.

For the fourth year in a row, The Fair Housing Center, The Arts Commission, Toledo Lucas County Public Library, and Toledo City Paper are partnering to host Ode to the ZIP Code! Toledo area residents penned short poems inspired by their ZIP Code, where the number of words in each line of the poem is determined by the corresponding digit in their ZIP Code.

Finalists have been chosen and will read their poems at a special event on April 18, 2019 at Handmade Toledo during the Art Loop. Winners will be selected from both the youth and adult categories and awarded cash prizes. The audience can join in by sharing zip odes during an open mic segment!

Top poems will also be published in the April 10 issue of the Toledo City Paper.

Last year's winning youth poem, by Tulia Pfeffinger:

4 Outside the house, waiting
3 To go in.
6 I’m nervous to see the inside
0 (holdingmybreathholdingmybreathholdingmybreath)
6 The door opens and I gasp—

April is both National Poetry Month and Fair Housing Month. The Ode to the ZIP Code event is a fun and creative way to engage the community in talking about where we live and how it affects our experiences and life outcomes. Inspiration for the contest came from the O, Miami Poetry Festival and WLRN-Miami Herald News, the originators of the “zip ode” concept.
