Event Details:
Sunday, June 10th from 12:30 - 3:00pm

Instructor: Phybr
Ages: High School Students to Adult, 14+
Skill Level: Beginner

Get an education in the basics of how to use spray paint! Introduction to spray paint techniques, including can control, how to create various lines, and how to use stencils will be covered. You'll create a galaxy utilizing the techniques learned during class, so you’ll have a finished piece of art you can display when finished. Phybr will go over how to use a skinny cap, medium cap, and super fat cap. Students will get in a warm-up exercise on the back side of their artwork surface, better preparing you for success once you've flipped to the finished artwork side! You’ll learn can control including how to achieve clean straight lines, using the cap as a tool to create paint splatters, and how to create a background.

Utilizing all of your can colors, you'll spend the largest portion of class creating planets, galaxies, and stars using caps, tape, splatter techniques and even dust for space nebulas. Because of the versatility and speed with which artists can work in spray paint, by class end you'll be able to let it dry, finish it by signing, and take a significantly sized finished work home!

A sheet of primed, 2x2 foot masonite that will serve as your painting surface is included in the registration fee, and will be provided for you! There are a few supplies you'll need to bring/buy...

Supply List:
Montana 94 Spray Paint:
- One can black
- One can white
- 3-4 additional cans, colors of your choice
One each of the Skinny, Astrofat and NY Fat caps
All of the above supplies can be purchased at our shop.

Each student should also bring a dropcloth, old bedsheet, or plastic sheet/tarp at least 8'x10' in size. You are welcome to bring a paint respirator, available at a hardware store, if desired. Prepare for a summer afternoon outdoors, as class will take place behind Art Supply Depo. Consider bringing water, a sun hat, and sunscreen. Wear some old sneaks too - you'll be on concrete and overspray is possible! While it is not required, those with health concerns or particularly scent/solvent sensitive should consider bringing a respirator.

In case of rain or inclement weather, tuition will be transferred to a later class date of your choice, July 22nd or August 19th.

About the Instructor:

Visual artist Phybr, originally from the Detroit art scene, is a professional mural artist and fine artist. He has a passion for design, color theory, and illustration. Initially apprenticing under an old hot rod airbrush artist as a young man, Phybr’s fascination with custom culture began. While learning how to pinstripe, airbrush, and custom paint he learned the history of “custom culture.” He has a BA in Graphic Design form, which intertwines with his custom painting background in both his street art and fine art. He has public murals in Detroit, Chicago, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Toledo, Miami, and St. Petersburg, as well as private murals located across the United States. He enjoys spreading his love for paint and design with students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
