The Arts Commission’s Momentum festival and Creative Placemaking program are excited to announce an interactive community workshop, “Found Sounds and Sampling”. Led by Ryan Edwards of Masary Studios, the workshop is scheduled for August 8, 2019, at the Mott Branch Library, 1010 Dorr St., Toledo, OH 43607 from 1PM – 3PM. Pre-registration is encouraged through the following link.

In this interactive workshop, participants identify sounds around them and record them right then and there. Collectively the sounds will be mapped onto a drum pad or keyboard. Participants will learn about the basics of sampling and question what is music and sound. Together, participants will make a beat and explore melodies, discussing compositional approaches and creative approaches to making music - all without traditional “musical” instruments.

This workshop will be the launchpad for bringing Masary Studios' piece Sound Sculpture to the Momentum festival on September 19-21. Workshop participants will be invited to record sounds for inclusion in a special score created just for the Momentum Festival- featuring only sounds from Toledo.

Sound Sculpture is an interactive musical instrument, a physical sound and light environment that facilitates play and connection, and a tool for creative expression. Sound Sculpture makes musical composition more physical, and sculptural creation more audible. Participants create not only physical structures but musical compositions manipulated by the physical relationship of the cubes. The experience is akin to walking onto staff paper, picking up the notes and moving them around, thereby changing pitch, rhythm, melody, and harmony.

Momentum, is a three-day festival of music and art along the riverfront in downtown Toledo, Ohio and will take place on September 19, 20, and 21, 2019. The event celebrates the transformative vibrancy of the arts for the Northwest Ohio region by supporting local artists and musicians and inviting international creatives to perform and exhibit in Toledo.

Momentum is generously sponsored by: ProMedica, HART, Owens Corning, The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Huntington Bank, KeyBank National Association Trustee for the Walter E. Terhune Memorial Fund, Buckeye Broadband, Rudolph Libbe Group, Mager Designs, Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Lucas County Port Authority, HCR ManorCare, Erie Construction, Mansour Wealth Management, City of Toledo, The Hylant Family Foundation, Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Renaissance Hotels (First Hospitality Group), Kingston Healthcare, The Toledo Zoo and Aquarium, La-Z-Boy, PNC Bank, Aly Sterling Philanthropy, Metroparks Toledo, The Andersons, Inc.
