The Foot of the Rapids

As summer arrives and we continue to deal with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, most of our local history venues remain closed for visitation. We’ll keep you informed as things open back up but, in the meantime, I want to share an excellent local history adventure for you to consider. The staff at Fort Meigs have launched a podcast called, “The Foot of the Rapids” and it's extremely well done!

This compelling, multipart podcast uses memoirs, letters home, poetry and music to immerse the listener in the fascinating story of Fort Meigs and Northwest Ohio’s role in the War of 1812. The stories cover a broad range of topics, including recruitment, sentry duty, everyday life at the fort, and how the British and Native Americans viewed the fort's role in their overall strategy. I've always said visiting Fort Meigs is a great lesson in American history but I also recommend going beyond a "look-see" by reading the soldiers' journals. Their words will give you a real feel for what life was like at the fort. This podcast brings that idea home in a very entertaining and dramatic way. You can easily appreciate how much work went into producing it by listening to a single episode but I recommend you check out the whole series—you'll be amazed at what you'll learn. Each episode is a comprehensive chapter in the Fort Meigs story.
