River House Arts opens new exhibition by Sandra Jane Heard
Eye On Art | 05/05/2014
River House Arts is very pleased to present Rust-Belt-Muse, our second solo exhibition by Sandra Jane Heard. The show opens with a public reception on Friday May 9th, from 6 ? 9 pm and runs through June 27th.
In 17 new sculptural works, Heard continues to explore the human condition with a keen eye towards the relationships that have imperiled our planet. Composed of found or “re-appropriated” materials and an innovative blend of traditional craft and textile techniques, these three-dimensional narratives expose our discord with Nature and with each other. The artist’s observations may be sharp, but by her expert hand and her careful attention to form, symmetry and balance, her sculptures are as elegant as they are incisive.
A resident of Perrysburg, Heard credits Northwest Ohio for refueling her creativity and her artistic career, as well as her hopes for a healthy, sustainable world. The UK born artist sees the Toledo area as “a former industrial power battered and weathered by time but still exhibiting hints of its former self and offering a simmering chance of renewal.”
Since her last exhibition at River House Arts in 2010, Heard’s work has been juried into more than a dozen regional, national, and international exhibitions. Her most recent awards include the 2013 Evansville Museum Guild Purchase Award (for her entry in the 43rd Mid-States Crafts Exhibition) and the 2013 Fiberarts International Director’s Award by The Society for Contemporary Craft and the The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. In May 2014 the Surface Design Association is featuring Heard in their quarterly journal, Surface Design.
Sandra Jane Heard is a graduate of Braintree College in Essex, England and the California College of Arts in San Francisco. She lives in Perrysburg with her husband and their two children.
Located in historic downtown Perrysburg, River House Arts is a fine art gallery with museum quality exhibitions that are always free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 11am ? 6pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays.
