Daily Dose  |  10/05/2015

The University of Toledo Music Department and the Jazz studies program welcome Expansions: The Dave Liebman Group. Dave Liebman will present a master class on October 15th at 2 pm. The group will perform in concert on October 15th at 7 pm. Both events will be held in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall.
Dave Liebman’s impressive record includes multiple Grammy nominations and an NEA Jazz Masters award. He was also named a Jazz Educators Network Legend of Jazz.
Liebman collaborates with a number of performance groups. The Expansions group looks towards the present generation of jazz musicians who have been schooled in conservatory and university settings. Expansions features pianist Bobby Avey, reedman Matt Vashlishan, drummer Alex Ritz, bassist Tony Marino and Dave Liebman on the soprano saxophone and wooden flute. The group specializes in elements of free jazz and re-arrangements of standards, all infused with the complex time signatures and harmonies being explored by the new jazz artists of our time. “Samsara,” Expansions first recording, was released in 2014. Midwest Record says “Playing with heat, passion and fire but not bombast, these forward thinking jazzbos are sure to keep Liebman’s NEA Master of Jazz award shiny for many years to come.”
The master class is free and open to the public. Tickets to the evening concert are $15 for general admission; and $10 for students and seniors 60+. Visit www.utoledo.Tix.com
