In the wake of the recent tragic shooting in Orlando, Fla., a local organization is celebrating LGBTQ acceptance. Join Equality Toledo for an evening of entertainment and good vibes during the Equality Toledo Loves Love Fest, 5-10 p.m., Saturday, July 9 at 1209 Adams St., Toledo.

The nonprofit is active in promoting LGBTQ education and rights information, and Resource Development Committee chair Elaine Korenich says they plan to make the Fest a yearly event. “The plan is for this event to become an annual thing. We're excited to see the response we get this year. I believe strongly in the work Equality Toledo does, and I'm excited to get to share an opportunity to celebrate with our community,” she said.

This is the first year for the Fest, and it will take place in front of the vibrant “Toledo Loves Love” mural on Adams Street in the Uptown District. The mural was coordinated by Art Corner Toledo, or ACT, in 2012, and completed by local artists MEDE and Mr.Taylor.Originally, Rachel Richardson of ACT had the mural commissioned as a wedding gift to a friend, to promote marriage equality and acceptance.

“I love that, for years after the wall was painted, the community is finding it to be a place that they can gather [ . . . ]  I also love the fact that this proves what I have always hypothesized, that murals create destinations where once there were forgotten parking lots,” Richardson said.

Brent Rabie is a board member for Equality Toledo, and is the main organizer for the event. He says the festival is something that has been in the works for a few years, and that this event is more crucial to the community now than ever before.

“There is so much going on in the world, we need to take some time to spread love and kindness. That is something that’s in the core of everything Equality Toledo does. I’m super excited for this to come to fruition, and look forward to many Love Fest in the years to come.”
