LeSo Gallery Presents Sawing a Woman in Half

Eye On Art  |  11/06/2016

LeSo Gallery, located at 1527 Starr Avenue in Toledo, is pleased to present Sawing A Woman In Half by Crystal Gale Phelps. This one-night-only performance art event is scheduled for Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 7:30pm. As the platform of this work is nontraditional, viewers are encouraged to come throughout the duration of the performance. Although the timeline of this event is variable, it may range from 20 minutes to one hour. Phelps will be available once the performance is complete for questions, commentary, and discussion.

Phelps’ presentation of Sawing A Woman In Half combines the lexicon of body art, performance, and circus arts to reclaim the violent history of stage magic toward female bodies. The prismatic qualities of live performance open the gesture of sawing into the realm of social commentary on the continued violence toward female gendered bodies.

“As a young female artist it is important for my work to engage with new audiences whom are in dialogue surrounding conceptual and ephemeral forms of expression,” commented Phelps.

Crystal Gale Phelps is a Master of Fine Arts candidate at Maine College of Art (expected completion date May 2017). In the fall of 2016 she was awarded the Roderick Dew Travel Grant for study in London, England. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Printmaking from Arizona State University in 2008. Phelps’ work has been included in exhibitions nationally, in both public and private institutions including: Mesa Contemporary Art Museum (Mesa, AZ), Modified Arts (Phoenix, AZ), and LeSo Gallery (Toledo, OH).
