Local artist Shelby Sweinhagen will showcase her love for car culture during the Visiting Artist series at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) Family Center Friday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. The free event, held the last Friday of the month, offers families the opportunity to hear directly from local artists and musicians.

An avowed car enthusiast, race car driver and Hot Wheels collector, Sweinhagen will share her artwork and guide participants in a hands-on activity where they will create car culture sculptures using recycled materials.

Sweinhagen discovered the art of welding and metal casting while a student at Bowling Green State University, and she was encouraged to step even further beyond the bounds of pencil and paper to help pursue her passion of creating sculpture inspired by the automobile. During her college career, she completed her first large scale sculpture which measured over 20 feet long, 10 feet high, and 15 feet wide.

“The Visiting Artist series offers an opportunity for both children and their adult caregivers to see the importance of art at a young age and how they can nurture the talent of their young children,” explained Regina Jankowski, Family Center Manager.

The Family Center is a free drop-in, hands-on art studio and play space for families with young children. Families work together to create works of art using a wide variety of mediums. The Family Center is open on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Fridays from 3:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The Family Center is supported in part by The Andersons, Mercy Health, and the TMA Ambassadors.
