A Passion Project: Balance Farms Opens to the Public

For nearly a decade, Toledo start-up Balance Pan-Asian Grille has been serving vegetable-focused Build-a-Bowls, Asian-inspired Tacos, and seasonal snacks to the Toledo and Cleveland communities, but this month the 5-store restaurant chain is taking its passion for locally-sourced food to another level with the grand opening of Balance Farms—an 8,600-square-foot indoor aquaponics farming facility in the heart of Downtown Toledo.

“Our model is more than just selling a product to our communities; it’s about utilizing business as a conduit to see the change that we want to create in the world,” said Prakash Karamchandani, Balance Co- Founder. “We strive to have restaurants be real restaurants, featuring thoughtfully sourced ingredients and scratch recipes, prepared with unparalleled transparency.”

Located at 215 N. Summit St., next to Balance’s flagship restaurant location, the vertically-integrated farm utilizes both hydroponics and aquaculture systems to grow fresh produce 365 days a year on a continuous harvest cycle. The facility cultivates crops grown above the soil, specializing in leafy greens, microgreens, living herbs, and fruiting vegetables such as peppers and tomatoes. Additionally, the farm utilizes LED lighting and energy-efficient climate control systems that reduce utility usage. The farm is pesticide-free, and runs on the organic fish matter produced by its collection of tilapia and koi fish.

“This project benefits the community in multiple ways, including reducing food miles, minimizing water waste, and keeping local dollars in the economy,” Karamchandani said. “It also allows us to live out our core values of transparency and community-mindedness. Customers are able to see the entire process of how we grow everything that we put on the table. By placing it in the 43604 zip code, an identified food desert, we are committed to bringing life and health to a once blighted spot in Toledo.”

With a firm commitment to educating the public, Balance Farms will welcome visitors after the November 22 event. Scheduled tours facilitated through a partnership with Imagination Station are available for groups and individuals.
