At its annual meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2020, the Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts’ Board of Trustees elected Pat Bowe, President and CEO of The Andersons, Inc., to be the organization’s 28th Board Chair. In this role, Bowe will oversee the direction and governance of the Toledo Symphony and Toledo Ballet, working with the board’s officers, committees, and trustees, alongside the organization’s President & CEO, Zak Vassar.

Bowe joined the Toledo Symphony’s Board of Trustees in March 2017 and was subsequently elected Vice Chair and head of the Governance and Nominations Committee in July 2018. He continued in these positions on the TAPA board following the merger of the Toledo Symphony and Toledo Ballet in January 2019. Prior to his arrival in Toledo, Bowe served on the board of the Minnesota Orchestra in Minneapolis.

“I am really excited to become Board Chair of the Toledo Symphony and Toledo Ballet,” says Bowe. “These are challenging times for non-profits, but I think that Zak and his team have assembled a great vision for the coming season. I think I speak for everyone in the community in saying that I can’t wait to get back to creating live performances.”

Steven Cavanaugh, Chief Financial Officer of ProMedica, has been elected Vice Chair and will lead TAPA’s Governance and Nominations Committee. “It’s a privilege to become Vice Chair of the TAPA Board and work with these two storied performing arts organizations,” says Cavanaugh. “I really look forward to working closely with Pat, Zak, and the other trustees to steer the Toledo Symphony and Toledo Ballet into the future. I’m a firm believer that, when the arts are strong, the community is stronger for it.”

“This is a major moment for our organization and board,” says Vassar. “We dramatically revised our governance structure a couple years ago, and this is the first time we’ve cycled through our board leadership. I couldn’t be happier with the process. As we confront the many uncertainties ahead, I am happy to have such a powerful and strategic board behind us. I’m also very proud that we are able to expand our board at a time that other organizations are halting elections and succession plans altogether.”

Pat Bowe succeeds Pam Hershberger who has led the organization since July 2018. “Serving as Board Chair of TAPA has been an honor. Over the past two years, I think we have taken really critical steps to sustain music and dance performances for generations to come,” says Hershberger. “I am particularly proud to have worked so closely on the merger between the Toledo Symphony and Toledo Ballet, as this is and will continue to be an opportunity to do more together than apart. I look forward to Pat’s board leadership. He’s been an excellent Vice Chair and has a huge amount of respect for the organization and its important role in the community.”

The Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts Board of Trustees also elected seven new board members to join the organization at its annual meeting: John Burson (Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP), Joel Jerger (First Federal Bank), John Reynolds (Owens-Illinois), Sara Smith (United Way of Greater Toledo), Desmond Strooh (Susan G. Komen Foundation), Dave Tighe (Findley), and Lance Woodworth (Destination Toledo).
