Fun Guide  |  06/24/2022 2:00 pm

The weather is warming and so are the engines of your favorite local food trucks. Chase down new eats around Toledo this season with our guide to twenty plus mobile eateries you just have to try now…

World Cuisine on Wheels

With dishes like egusi soup, potato bhajia, jerk wings and curry stews, the Jerk & Jollof BBQ Foodtruck encourages your taste buds to wander across flavors from the Carribean, East, and West Africa.

El Padrino Street Tacos makes the beloved Mexican dish of birria (meat with rich, warming spices - often including cinnamon) more portable! Try their PizzaBirria or QuesaBirria. Really hungry? Antojitos Laredo Tacos frequently offers full meal specials, which include rice and beans. Looking for a refreshing way to end your meal? We love the mixed fruit cup from Los Agaves Taqueria with watermelon, pineapple and cucumber topped with lime and Tajín.

If you are looking for halal food truck options try the tacos from Baba’s Eats, which feature kofta, shawarma, and more tucked neatly into your choice of tortilla or a lettuce wrap with feta creme.

The Mama’s Filipino-American truck is gearing up for her maiden voyage this summer. We’re looking forward to the lumpia, or traditional Filipino-style eggrolls, and seasonal stir fry vegetables.

All-American Street Food

The Koral Hamburg team has been a local favorite since 1926 when their brick-and-mortar opened. The owner intended to retire in 2017 but went mobile instead, much to the delight of fans of their burgers, onion rings, and shakes. Looking for a bit of variety in your burger toppings? Try the BBQ bacon or French onion menu choices from Beastro Burger Truck - all served on lightly toasted brioche. Another tasty option is JoJo’s Famous - a bit of a local legend among fans of the butter burger style.

A Toledo favorite since 1993, We Be Ribs offers BBQ staples as their name suggests, but also a few main-and-side mashups like saucy, pork topped nachos and loaded fries. Planning an event and want a fun truck to pull up outside? Big C’s Barbeque serves you out of a little log cabin right behind their smoker!

If chicken is what you’re craving, find Sisi’s The Food Truck, where options include Hawaiian or buffalo sandwiches, jerk wings, and chicken & waffles. Prefer your chicken atop a mashed potato bowl? Try The Loaded Chicken food truck.

Those looking for a giggle will love the creative names that Maybe Cheese Born With It has granted their loaded mac and cheese, from Pesto Both Worlds to the Truffle Shuffle Mac.

Finally, where would food trucks be without their predecessor - the hot dog cart? The vehicle may have changed, but the taste is still summer perfection. Duce’s Dawgs has been voted Toledo’s Best Coney Dog in recent years, and we love the junkyard dog option from Smashdawgs where you can pick a whopping six toppings for one set price.

Vegan-Friendly Food Trucks

Looking to eat lighter, or limit your environmental impact? Try vegan food trucks! Downtown restaurant The Leaf & Seed began on wheels, and their truck features many of the same favorites you count on from their brick-and-mortar - such as the Nashville chick’n sammie.  New this spring is Vegan Str’EAT serving up fruit bowls and stuffed avocado boats among other traditional food truck fare gone vegan, such as Chicago dogs and tacos.

Also serving up delicious vegan hot dogs is the Frankly Plant Based Kitchen Truck - try their banh mi dog, or switch it up and snag buffalo cauliflower chunks.

Coffee and Dessert

Sweet treats from area food trucks are as varied as they are delicious, from Lyle’s Crepes to Glaze ‘Em Gourmet Funnel Cakes. Opening this summer, we’re looking forward to rich, dipped cheesecake pops from DADip Toledo.

Trip’n Biscuits offers both savory & sweet fare, but this spring we’re obsessing over a sweet new menu item - the Calypso is essentially bananas foster on a biscuit, offering up rich vanilla rum custard and caramel sauce.

If you prefer a fruity and healthier end to your meal, track down the Tutti Fruity truck offering dairy-free smoothies made with perfectly ripe fruit.

On the go? Try a Cheesecake Jar or Macaron Pack from NeNe’s Sweets

If you need a pick-me-up to keep you on the move after the slight food coma the above trucks put you in, seek out Wandering Bean Coffee Co., Flying Rhino or Sweet Nate’s Coffee.
