Community Radio Station WAKT 106.1FM to Launch October 1 with Open House

WAKT 106.1FM, a community-radio station, is inviting the public to attend a free open house on Saturday, October 1 from 3-7PM at the site of their newly established studio. The event will include tours of the studio space, information on the station, and guidance on how to apply for a time slot on the station.

As a community radio station, WAKT 106.1FM employs a limited "public access" model which allows members of the public to submit show ideas and receive time slots on the station at no cost. Applicants who pass the screening process and required training are provided technical and practical support in producing their own radio program.

The station is a project of the nonprofit Toledo Integrated Media Education, which focuses on providing a platform for underrepresented perspectives in the local media landscape. In an effort to highlight and support local creative talent, WAKT 106.1FM airs a rotating playlist of local music during unused time slots.

The open house will also feature live music performances by local musicians including Herbie and the Love Bugs, New Moon with Laurie Swyers, and Brent Lowry, as well as artist tables and food trucks. Original works by local artists Chris Rodriguez, Adrian Lime, Randy Bennet, and Miriam Wagoner will be auctioned off to benefit the station.
