Sunshine Communities, in partnership with the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities, will celebrate the grand opening of its new Tech House on Wednesday, July 15, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Building I, 7223 Maumee Western Road, Maumee.

Made possible through funding from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) and a partnership with Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Lucas DD) the Tech House is an interactive demonstration home where individuals with developmental disabilities, families, providers, educators, therapists, physicians, and other community partners can explore assistive technology designed to increase independence, accessibility, communication, and safety. The project is supported through DODD's Innovative Technology Solutions Grant, which helps integrate technology into services that improve the lives of Ohioans with developmental disabilities.

Unlike a traditional showroom, the Tech House allows visitors to see, touch, and test technology in a realistic home environment before recommending or implementing solutions. Demonstrations include adaptive equipment, environmental modifications, smart home technology, communication devices, and clinical supports.

"The Tech House gives people the opportunity to experience technology before making important decisions," said Audrey King, Manager, Technology Integration at Sunshine Communities. "By touring a home-like environment, visitors can see practical, real-world applications of technology and gain confidence in selecting solutions that support greater independence, safety, and quality of life."

Lucas DD serves more than 4,500 individuals throughout the county through service coordination, Medicaid administration, provider support, early intervention and community inclusion programs. The Tech House expands the mission of both agencies and their investment in assistive technology by creating a permanent space where individuals, families, and professionals can explore emerging solutions together.

"This partnership with our friends at Sunshine represents a significant investment in expanding access to assistive technology in our area," said Michele Myerholtz, Superintendent of Lucas DD. "The Tech House is a place where individuals, families and professionals can explore innovative tools and life-altering technology, which offers individuals with disabilities more dignity and independence to reach their full potential.”

The grand opening is free and open to providers, healthcare professionals, educators, community partners, families, and the public. Guests can tour the home, experience hands-on demonstrations, and discover how assistive technology can support people with developmental disabilities, older adults, and caregivers throughout every stage of life.
