1908: Toledo grabs the attention of the entire nation as the host of the official Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) 42nd Encampment, held on September 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The Encampment included a massive parade in downtown Toledo featuring an estimated 12,000 marchers. The procession got underway at 11 a.m. on September 2, and marchers didn’t finish passing the review stand located on Madison Avenue and Thirteenth Street until just before 3 p.m. It coursed its way up Madison, from Fifteenth Street, west to Woodruff Avenue, to Collingwood Avenue, to Jefferson Avenue, to St. Clair Street, and back on Madison Avenue to Fifteenth Street.
