1836: The Toledo War unofficially ends as Michigan Territory's second attempt to pass the federal government's compromise is convened on December 14, 1836, with the delegates voting to accept the proposal. The “Frostbitten Convention,” as it was called, officially ends the Toledo War. Ohio keeps Toledo and the soon-to-be new state of Michigan gains title to the western three-quarters of the upper peninsula as compensation. In the end, Michigan gained 9,000 square miles of the most valuable timber, iron, and copper country in America.
