Exploring Fort Meigs | Ohio
Venue Reviews | Posted by: Tedd Long | 05/23/2019
The first thing you notice when you walk inside the massive wooden gates of Fort Meigs is the colossal scope of the wooden-walled fortification. At over 62 acres, it’s hard not to think about the challenges the soldiers faced when they built this stronghold in the harsh winter setting of February 1813. Built by order of General William Henry Harrison to defend Ohio during the War of 1812, Fort Meigs successfully withstood two sieges by a combined British, Canadian, and Native American force. The stories you learn here just keep on coming. It is a true adventure!
There are three main features that make up this wonderful local history destination. First is the Visitor Center housing an education center, restrooms, and vending machines. The main feature of the Visitor Center is the Museum Store, offering souvenirs, unique gifts, and one of the area's best local history bookstores. Second is the Museum exhibit called “Legacy of Freedom: Fort Meigs in the War of 1812” which helps relate the fascinating story of Fort Meigs with hundreds of original artifacts on display, many of which were found on-site as archaeologists investigated the grounds. Finally, there’s the fort itself. It is very impressive and features six blockhouses, each offering a unique story about the fort and the soldiers who lived there.
